Erma Bombeck
For those too young to know her, Erma Bombeck was a humorist writer whose columns appeared in 900 newspapers from 1965 to 1996. Some 30 million readers read her weekly take on being a Midwestern suburban, stay-at-home mother, and wife. In addition, she authored 15 books, all best sellers.
By the time of her death from cancer in April 1996, she had published some 4000 columns. She continued to write until five days before her death.
Many of her witticisms have stood the test of time, and are still valid in today’s world.
When I was in the Navy’s Officer Candidate School and a lot of time and effort were applied to bed making, someone tacked up a poster on the bulkhead of our barracks, “No one ever died sleeping in an unmade bed.”
It has remained one of my favorite Erma Bombeck quotes to this day.
Ask my wife.
I liked the unmade bed quote, so many times in the past, I slept in an unmade bed. It was almost a calling card; I was just lazy. Today, I'm up early, because I can't sleep, but I left my half of the bed unmade, and I know it won't be a problem because I can sleep later.
Thanks, Tom. I hope you and Ellen have a great holiday. I wish you good health and the very best in 2025.
